Position Summary

As a Product Engineer on Energizer’s R&D Auto Care team you will develop and guide product improvements key to maintaining our industry position. You will work with a global, cross-functional team that includes internal scientists and external suppliers to enhance our products. Product formulation experience and an understanding of manufacturing processes and project management skills are preferred.

The position, based in Dayton or Cleveland, Ohio, is a part of Energizer’s Auto Care business, a customer-focused, innovation-oriented, fast growing consumer packaged goods company. Energizer is passionate about making time in the car more enjoyable with market-guiding brands of car air fresheners, cleaning and conditioning products.


The position supports global automotive brands including Armor All, Nu Finish, Eagle One, and California Scents by providing formulation, engineering, and scale-up support to enhance existing portfolio. Specific accountability include:

  • Work as part of the Energizer team to develop product cost and/or performance improvements, evaluate performance, and engineer solutions to deliver on time, cost, and performance objectives.

  • Interact as part of a cross-functional team including marketing, procurement, legal, and external third parties such as global suppliers and contract manufacturers

  • Develop action plans and conduct robust experiments to generate new engineering and scientific knowledge that guide to new and improved products and processes.

  • Coordinate manufacture and testing of prototype working models, and work with internal plants and external suppliers to implement product requirements.

  • Provide engineering support to supplier and quality teams during Pilot and Production runs by traveling to manufacturing locations. Troubleshoot product and manufacturing issues as needed.

  • Ensure product meets relevant national, international and industry standards. Coordinate product certification testing.

  • Maintain accurate, complete and detailed records including product specification and engineering documents.

  • Assist with Sourcing and Procurement activities, including participation in supplier audits.

  • Support the technical organization to resolve customer, consumer, and supplier technical issues.

  • Practice proper safety procedures, provide guidance to others in key result areas, and participate in continuous improvement activities, serving as a team member as required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • B.S. in Engineering, Science or equivalent work experience.

  • A minimum of 2-3 years of industrial or equivalent work experience with formulation of consumer and/or industrial products.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • MS degree in Engineering or Science

  • Experience with Team guidance, Stage Gate Methodology, Statistics, Project Management, and/or Design of Experiments.

Working Relationships & Environment

Working Relationships

Reports to R&D Associate Manager. Key relationships will include R&D team, Marketing, Procurement, external Suppliers, and Operations groups.

Work Environment

Periodic travel between locations near Dayton and Cleveland, OH, with occasional visits to suppliers required. Total travel up to 30%. The employee will also be expected to participate in occasional teleconference meetings with global colleagues in different time zones.
