Position Summary

The Legal Department Manager will be responsible for all operational aspects of the legal department, and support the real estate, regulatory and environmental teams as needed.  Specifically, the Legal Department Manager will be responsible for all aspects of legal operations, including legal services vendor management, financial/budgeting processes, ensuring legal vendor service delivery, including implementing alternative fee arrangements where possible to bring greater visibility and predictability to legal spend, and ownership of department technology (including first line support).  The role will also be responsible for researching, evaluating and implementing best practices related to document management, matter management and billing software.  The Legal Department Manager will also manage other legal department administrators to ensure equitable apportionment of workloads and maintain alignment with the legal department objectives. 

Accountabilities

  • Manage the RELIANCE functional budget (which includes legal, corporate secretary, regulatory, compliance and real estate subfunctions), tracking accruals and forecasting, working closely with Finance function to ensure alignment with organizational goals and guidance

  • Implement vendor management program to ensure appropriate cost for all outside legal spend, under fee arrangements that bring predictability to legal spend

  • Create and implement a long-term technology roadmap, including tools such as e-billing/matter management, business process management, e-signature, etc.

Create and maintain relationships with core company functions, including IT and Finance

  • Oversight of all legal IT programs (Document Management, Matter Management, E-Billing System, Intellectual Property Systems,) and development of IT program strategy

  • Management of legal department procedures (law firm engagement and billing policies, matter setup protocol)

  • Implementation of new legal department procedures and initiatives

  • Manage all legal department administrator

  • Assistance in event of merger or acquisition related to integration of legal department people & systems

  • Coordinating all operational functions required by legal department

Specific Accountabilities

  • Educate and manage all internal and external storage for the RELIANCE team. Coordinate with RIM retention owner

  • On/Off –Boarding of new legal colleagues (including training on all legal IT systems)

  • Work with attorneys to establish ABP Budgets for RELIANCE subfunctions

  • Reconcile and prepare quarterly forecasts for Finance

  • Assist with strategic planning process, as needed or appropriate

  • Run monthly reports as needed

  • Managing legal department subscriptions (IT & paper)

  • Legal Technology

o Develop and manage a roadmap for legal technology at Spectrum Brands; continually assess new developments in the legal technology space and the potential impacts to the roadmap

o Lead and manage new technology and data initiatives, including project design, execution, change management, training and communications

o Evaluate new or improved technology solutions for the legal department, including automated workflows; contract, document and knowledge management; dashboards; eBilling systems; group communication platforms, etc.

o Manage legal technology vendor relationships, including continued assessment and reporting of value delivered

o Identify and implement process improvements and solutions around departmental structure, systems, technologies and control

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least 7-10 years' experience at in-house legal department

  • Bachelor's Degree (4 year undergraduate) required

  • Budgeting experience

  • Highly organized with ability to multi-task and prioritize competing tasks

  • Client-service mentality; highly responsive team player

  • Ability to respond to last minute requests and inquiries quickly and thoughtfully

  • High proficiency with IT solutions (Word, Excel, Power Point), particularly those used by in-house legal departments (iManage and eCounsel)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Management experience 

  • Paralegal or Certified Legal Operations Manager
