Position Summary

The Electrical Shop Technologist is an accomplished trades person that supports the R &D facility infrastructure systems as well as the chemical laboratories and manufacturing pilot lines from an electrical maintenance standpoint. This person will bring strong mechanical aptitude and skills. As part of the facilities team the Electrical Shop Technologist is accountable for the troubleshooting and repair of laboratory equipment, real property equipment, security and alarm systems, process monitoring systems, pilot manufacturing line equipment, as well as assisting with refurbishing and new installation projects.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on building systems such as Motor Control Centers, Distribution Panels, Transformers, Air Compressors, Boilers, HVAC Equipment, UPS systems, Fans, Blowers, Fume Hoods, Motors, Pumps, Cooling Towers and Tower Water Treatment System, Deionization System, Backup Generator, Security Systems, Central Clock System, and Lighting Systems.

  • Install or modify premises wiring systems such as electrical services, lighting, receptacles, telecom wiring, and LAN wiring

  • Provide maintenance and installation support on laboratory equipment such as, Blenders, Mixers, Battery Testing Apparatus, Misc. Analytical Equipment, Environmental Chambers, Power Supplies, Vacuum Pumps, Inert Atmosphere Boxes, and Dry Room Equipment.

  • Repair and install Pilot Line Battery Making equipment. This equipment is typically arranged in separate work cells, but may be semi-automated. The equipment is typically powered by motor sizes from 1/4 to 10 horsepower with supply voltages ranging from 110 volts to 480 volts AC. Types of equipment include, presses, pumps, filling/dispensing stations, metal forming equipment, powder mixing equipment, and slurry mixing equipment.

  • Support the facility safety effort by:

  • Playing a significant role on the Emergency Response Team.

  • Providing expertise and support on many life safety systems such as Combustible Gas Detection systems, Fire Alarm System, Dry Room Alarm systems, and other misc. alarm systems.

  • Perform training for Contractor Compliance safety, Fire Safety, Scissor Lift Rescue, and Elevator Rescue

  • Audit colleagues on Lock Out Tag Out, and participate in the Hazardous Energy Control Team

Required Skills and Experience

  • High school graduate with formal skilled trades training in a technical school or formal apprenticeship program

  • 6+ years’ experience as an electrician/maintenance person in light to medium industry or commercial laboratory.

  • Trained and current in NFPA 70E and NFPA 70.

  • Outstanding Troubleshooting and Communication Skills

  • Experience with 480/240/208/110 volt distribution systems, 480 volt Motor Control Centers, Switchgear, and Commercial lighting systems

  • Knowledge of Commercial/Industrial wiring practices and methods including rigid conduit, EMT, and FMC

  • Can install and troubleshoot AD/DC motors, motor starters, and variable speed controllers

  • Can install, program, and maintain small PLC’s & HMI’s, Relay Logic, Switches, Push Buttons, Guard Safety Relays, Light Curtains, and industrial/scientific sensors such as photoelectric and proximity switches

  • Knowledge of Process Controllers – controlling variables such as temperature, pressure, humidity, etc..

  • Execute LAN (Ethernet Cat 5, Cat 5E, Cat6) and Telephone system wiring and practices

  • Strong Mechanical background including experience with pumps, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical transmission systems ie. gearboxes, belts, pulleys, chains, sprockets, indexing drives

  • Solid Computer skills. Must be able to efficiently and effectively:

  • Communicate through Email (Microsoft Outlook)

  • Leverage information searching on the Internet

  • Generate Word documents, Power Point presentations, and simple Excel Spreadsheets.

  • Procure project materials with a credit card and clear expense reports.

  • General knowledge and understanding of Fire Alarm Systems, CCTV systems, UPS systems, Generators, Boiler and Furnace Control Systems, HVAC systems

  • Trained and proficient in the use of standard shop tools. Ability to interpret shop manuals, schematics, and blueprints

  • Ability to talk, hear, see, manual dexterity, stoop, bend, twist and lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 2 year Associates Degree in Electricity or Industrial Maintenance

  • Wiring methods in Hazardous locations such as Class 1 Division 1 and Division 2

  • Servo/Stepper Motion systems including motors and controllers

  • Experience with Logix 500/5000 and RS Studio a plus.

  • Knowledge in other codes such as NFPA 79, NFPA 70B, NFPA 30, NFPA 101 a plus.

Working Relationships & Environment

Working Relationships

The Electrical Shop Technologist reports to the facility Electrical Engineer and will also receive direction from the Maintenance Coordinator. The individual will also routinely collaborate with other shop technologists, lab technicians, engineers, managers, and scientists.

Work Environment

  • The Westlake Ohio facility is a Research and Development laboratory for Batteries, Flashlights, Automotive Appearance Chemicals, and Automotive Fragrance products.

  • This position reports Monday through Friday, day shift.
