Energizer is looking for a Senior Materials Engineer to join our Zinc Air battery team. In this position you would be responsible for proposing, planning, and carrying out Zinc Air battery development projects within Energizer, focusing on performance and cost improvements in line with Zinc Air roadmap goals for all materials involved in battery production, such as cathode material, anode chemicals and metals.
Design and execute development projects through laboratory and/or pilot line studies in line with Zinc Air roadmap goals encompassing improvements to manufacturing processes and materials.
Evaluate battery performance and reliability by applying statistical methods.
Prepare data for review to justify production runs. Make recommendations to management based on data.
Prepare reports and presentations documenting work and progress.
Present updates on projects to plants and management.
Develop knowledge of all battery materials: metals, polymers, additives, etc.; and their manufacturing processes, internal and external, used to make them.
Assist plants in problem-solving.
Develop technical relationships with suppliers.
Design, conduct, and analyze experiments to explain fundamental reasons for battery performance limitations and use this understanding to propose and test methods/materials/processes for moving beyond those limitations.
Conduct laboratory evaluations to screen candidate materials for anode, cathode and cell components. Improve predictive nature of lab work through correlation to cell outputs.
Carry out physical, (electro)chemical testing on alternate materials. Evaluate interactions between anode, cathode, electrolyte and barrier materials, and their cumulative effect on cell outputs.
As required, develop in-house capabilities for advanced characterization of materials.
Supervise technicians as required.
Coordinate, build, analyze, and summarize experimental information. Communicate results and project status in the form of presentations. Participate in problem-solving activities.
Follow technology roadmaps to meet objectives in a timely manner. Work in parallel with process development, product development, and implementation resources to ensure capable transfer to the product.
Contribute to future strategy within the Zin Air roadmap structure
Evaluate new processes for the zinc-air anode, electrolyte, and cathode preparation.
Assist with transfer of data and process knowledge to plant personnel during pilot runs and scale-up.
Stay up to date with current technology trends by reading relevant technical literature (journals, patents and reports). Monitor competitive activity and make recommendations on enhancing the company’s zinc-air IP portfolio
Required Skills and Experience
Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline is required: B.S. degree with 5-10 years of experience OR M.S. degree with 2-8 years of experience OR Ph.D. degree with 0-5 years of experience.
Experience with R&D projects
Ability to apply fundamental engineering and scientific principles to familiar and new situations.
Experience managing multiple projects concurrently demonstrated capability in project planning.
Results-oriented, proactive, able to work both independently and on teams.
Eagerness to take a hands-on approach to prototype, learning and identifying problems.
Strong analytical skills, ability to draw conclusions and determine strategies based on data.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Comfortable in manufacturing and laboratory environments.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience relevant to the electrochemical cell and battery development. Specific experience in Zinc-air, Alkaline, Lithium-ion, Lithium polymer, or beyond lithium-ion battery systems is preferred, especially regarding advanced and commercial formulations.
Acquaintance with common (electro)chemical and physical characterization techniques in battery technology, such as cyclic voltammetry, AC Impedance spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, EDX, BET, TGA, porosity and diffusion measurements, should be demonstrated.
Experience in scale-up projects and project management within the R&D environment
Strong statistical skills, experience with Minitab (or equivalent).
Design of experiments (DOE) experience.
Statistical process control (SPC) and manufacturing quality control (Infinity QS).
Familiarity with Microsoft Project.
Working Relationships & Environment
Reports to Staff Technology Engineer – Battery R&D.
Key internal relationships include all of the R&D, pilot line, analytical, and operations groups.
Working conditions are an R&D laboratory and office environment. The use of proper PPE is required during laboratory work
Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel domestically up to 15% of the time
