Position Summary

An Analytical Technician executes routine and non-routine analytical testing, experiments, and tasks to support R&D product design, improvements, and material quality. The role works within a self-directed team of Technicians and Technologists to independently resolve requests for testing which are generated by Product Design Engineers and Scientists.


Executing Tests

  • Performs routine and non-routine analytical testing using both basic and advanced laboratory techniques.

  • Practices proper safety procedures and reports unsafe acts or conditions when executing tests.

Planning Experiments

  • Plans and executes routine and non-routine testing, experiments, and tasks.

  • Identifies and implements continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Develops methods for new experiments or tests and documents methods appropriately.

  • Builds and maintains experiment and testing work schedules to meet business needs.

  • Provide insight and feedback to engineers on testing strategy and potential test issues.

Data Capture and Reporting

  • Collects, records, and transcribes routine and non-routine data.

  • Performs routine and non-routine calculations; creates routine and non-routine tables, charts, and graphs.

  • Creates reports that summarize data in technical report format and analyzes for exceptions.

  • Escalates and communicates exceptions and issues to appropriate levels effectively.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Uses appropriate materials and equipment and understands the underlying principles of use or operation, including:

  • Basic equipment like balances, ovens, mixers, and hotplates.

  • Advanced equipment such as titrators, elemental analyzers, and chromatography systems

  • May also perform additional duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience

  • One-two years of pertinent college course work in Chemistry (or equivalent experience/education) with full understanding and practical working knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry.

  • A good fundamental understanding of higher-level mathematics, mechanics, general science, and general computer applications.

  • Will generally have two-five years of demonstrated related experience in a technical laboratory or similar environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • S or B.A in chemistry (or similar) with full understanding and practical working knowledge of chemistry and electrochemistry principles.

Working Relationships & Environment

  • Interfaces with supervisor for direction and guidance.

  • Works with and provides guidance to co-workers as necessary.

  • Interfaces with other departments or groups to acquire the necessary information for testing and/or data reporting.

Work Environment

  • The Westlake, Ohio facility is a Research and Development laboratory for Batteries, Lighting, and Automotive Appearance and Fragrance products.

  • Will work in a technical laboratory setting with limited travel (likely less than 5% of the time).

  • Able to perform repetitive manual tasks requiring hands, standing for extended periods of time, and lifting up to 35 lbs.

  • This position reports Monday-Friday, day shift. Occasionally, the schedule may vary from typical business hours

  • Exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
