Position Summary

Provide key support of product design improvements by executing routine and non-routine experiments and tasks that have the most impact on product development or in defining the causes and solutions of technical problems within research and development.


  • Plans and executes routine production responsibilities and non-routine experiments and tasks.

  • Collects, records, and transcribes routine and non-routine data; performs routine and non-routine calculations; creates routine and non-routine tables and charts; summarizes data and analyzes for exceptions; offers explanations for data exceptions; creates data reports.

  • Uses appropriate materials and equipment and understands the underlying principles of use or operation; applies understanding to the planning and execution of assigned program steps, experiments and tasks.

  • Understands the basic principles, materials, and parts of energy systems and/or devices in assigned areas. Conducts experiments, under team leader guidance, leading to new and improved systems, constructions, or processes having marketable cost/performance advantages.

  • Trains and instructs others to perform routine and non-routine tasks and experiments. Creates training documentation.

  • Coordinates the work of co-workers and interfaces with other R&D product groups, equipment, service groups, and plants to acquire the information and services necessary to execute assigned program steps, experiments and tasks.

  • Executes experiments leading to new or improved methods and provides full documentation of results.

  • Practices proper safety procedures. Recognizes, reports and documents unsafe acts or conditions.

  • Provides leadership for others in Key Result areas.

  • Participates in and implements department continuous improvement activities. Serves as an ad hoc team member as required.

  • Regularly communicates and engages with peers and stakeholders as needed

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Testing and characterizing materials using laboratory instruments.

  • Mixing materials using industrial mixers.

  • Building components using coasters, calendars, and related equipment.

  • Assembling final products using various pieces of production equipment.

  • Troubleshooting issues with machines and working with team members to resolve issues.

  • Measuring, collecting & analyzing data, and providing real-time results and feedback to engineers.

  • Ensuring the smooth operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by taking an ownership mentality.

  • Locating sources of problems by observation, locating and elevating causes of concern

Required Skills and Experience

  • Three years of pertinent college coursework or equivalent experience/education and a good fundamental understanding of higher-level mathematics, mechanics, general science, and general computer applications.

  • Will generally have 5-10 years of demonstrated related experience in a technical laboratory or similar environment.

  • Ability to interpret equipment manuals and work instructions.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Ability to be fitted for and use a particulate respirator.

  • Available to work overtime as needed.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook.

Working Relationships & Environment

  • Interfaces with supervisor for limited direction and guidance.

  • Works with and provides guidance to co-workers as necessary.

  • Interfaces with other departments or groups to acquire necessary information.

Work Environment

  • Will work in an office and laboratory setting

  • Up to 10% travel is required.

  • A work schedule that may occasionally vary from typical business hours.
