Energizer is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our Zinc Air battery team. In this position, you would be responsible for carrying out components of Zinc-Air battery development projects within Energizer, focusing on performance and cost improvements in line with Zinc Air roadmap goals for all materials involved in battery production, such as cathode material, anode chemicals and metals.
Conduct laboratory and/or pilot line studies to move projects or parts of projects forward, in line with Zinc Air roadmap goals encompassing improvements to the product through improved materials and manufacturing processes.
Run pilot line trials, plant trials, and limited production runs.
Evaluate battery performance and reliability by applying statistical methods.
Analyze data and draw supportable conclusions leading to the next steps
Prepare data for review to justify production runs.
Prepare reports and presentations documenting work and progress.
Develop knowledge of all battery materials: metals, polymers, additives, etc.; and the manufacturing processes, internal and external, used to make them.
Under the guidance of senior staff, perform strategic development work on the products and processes needed for the fulfillment of project goals, as well as participate in problem-solving activities on a variety of battery chemistries.
Under the guidance of senior staff as needed, design, coordinate, conduct, and analyze experiments to explain fundamental reasons for battery performance limitations, and use this understanding to propose and test methods, materials, and/or processes to move beyond those limitations.
Conduct laboratory evaluations to screen candidate materials for cell components and improve the predictive nature of lab work through correlation to cell outputs.
Contribute to the determination of cell requirements, design, and construction using both modeling and experimentation.
As required, collaborate with both outside suppliers, collaborators, and customers, as well as in-house experts and resources.
Help to monitor the accuracy and quality of work in parts of the project.
Analyze and summarize experimental information, communicating the results and project status in the form of presentations and reports.
Follow technology roadmaps to meet objectives in a timely manner. Work in parallel with process development, product development, and implementation resources to ensure capable transfer to the product.
Assist with the transfer of data and process knowledge to technology center and plant personnel during experiments, pilot runs, and scale-up.
Stay up to date with current technology trends by reading relevant technical literature (journals, patents and reports) and teaching others what is learned.
Required Skills and Experience
B.S. or M.S. Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline is required.
Industry experience is preferred but not required.
Ability to apply fundamental engineering and scientific principles to familiar and new situations.
Results-oriented, proactive, able to work both independently and on teams.
Eagerness to take a hands-on approach to prototype, learning and identifying problems.
Strong analytical skills, ability to draw conclusions and determine strategies based on data.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Up to 5 years of experience relevant to the electrochemical cell and battery development. Specific experience in Zinc-air, Alkaline, Lithium-ion, Lithium polymer, or beyond lithium-ion battery systems is preferred, especially regarding to advanced and commercial formulations.
Acquaintance with (electro)chemical and physical characterization techniques in battery technology, such as cyclic voltammetry, AC Impedance spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, EDX, BET, TGA, porosity and diffusion measurement
Experience in scale-up projects and project management
Strong statistical skills, experience with Minitab (or equivalent).
Design of experiments (DOE) experience.
Statistical process control (SPC) and manufacturing quality control (Infinity QS).
Working Relationships & Environment
Reports to Staff Technology Engineer – Battery R&D.
Key internal relationships i include all of R&D, pilot line, analytical, and operations groups.
Working conditions are an R&D laboratory and office environment. The use of proper PPE is required when applicable.
Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel domestically up to 15% of the time
